Personal travel · money playbook
Every dollar, working.
Two cards, played right, quietly hand back four figures a year in credits, points, and free bags. This is the cheat sheet: which card to swipe, which credit to burn, and how to turn spend into flights.
Sapphire Preferred
Delta Gold
Which card do I swipe?
The one habit that matters most. Match the purchase to the card that earns the most — or unlocks a benefit. When in doubt, Sapphire (more flexible points + better protection).
| You're paying for… | Swipe | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Delta flights | Delta Gold | Required to get the free checked bag. Also 2× miles + counts toward the $200 flight credit. |
| Restaurants / takeout / delivery | Sapphire | 3× points beats Delta's 2×. Your biggest everyday category. |
| Other airlines, trains, tolls, parking, taxis* | Sapphire | 2× + trip-delay & baggage insurance kick in when you pay with it. |
| Hotels booked via Chase Travel | Sapphire | 5× points, and the first $100/yr is refunded (hotel credit). |
| Rideshare (first $10/month) | Delta Gold | Triggers the $10/mo rideshare statement credit = free money. Beyond $10, use Sapphire (5× on Lyft). |
| Gas & EV charging | Sapphire | 3× (new 2026 category). Delta earns only 1×. |
| Groceries — online | Sapphire | 3× online grocery. (Not Walmart/Target/clubs.) |
| Groceries — in-store US supermarket | Delta Gold | 2× US supermarkets. Sapphire earns only 1× in-store. |
| Streaming (Netflix, Spotify…) | Sapphire | 3× on select streaming. |
| Everything else | Sapphire | Both earn 1×, but Sapphire points are worth more & transfer to airlines. |
*Taxis/tolls/parking/rideshare all count as "travel" for Sapphire's 2× and its trip protections.
Sapphire Preferred, fully used
$95/year, but the credits alone more than pay for it. The real magic is points that transfer 1:1 to airlines — worth far more than cash back.

These credits are yours whether you use them or not — miss one and you've handed the bank free fee money. Tap a box to check it off (saves in your browser).
Excludes the conditional $200 Delta spend credit and the value of points earned. Against $95 + $150 in fees, you're net ahead by hundreds before a single point is redeemed.
Turning points into flights
Cash back is the worst way to use these points. Here's the value ladder, best to worst.
- Best — transfer Ultimate Rewards to airline partners (1:1). Move Sapphire points to United, Southwest, JetBlue, Air France/KLM, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and book flights that can be worth 2–4¢ per point. This is where the outsized value lives.
- Good — Chase Travel "Points Boost." Select flights & hotels in the Chase Travel portal redeem at a boosted rate (up to ~2× on some premium options). No transfer needed.
- Situational — World of Hyatt. Still a transfer partner but the ratio dropped to 4:3 in 2026 (1,000 pts → 750 Hyatt), so it's no longer the automatic slam-dunk. Only transfer for a specific high-value Hyatt night.
- Delta SkyMiles — spend, don't hoard. SkyMiles have no fixed value and drift down over time. Use them for Delta flights and stack TakeOff 15 for 15% off. Don't sit on a big balance.
- Avoid — cash back / gift cards / Amazon checkout. These cap out around 1¢/point. You're leaving half the value behind.
